5.The Department of Geography built the Pingshi Hydrological Station
In May 1942, days of heavy rain led to a drastic rise in water levels of Zhenjiang River and Wujiang River, causing floods in Shaoguan City. Therefore, the Shaoguan Municipal Administration commissioned the Department of Geography to build the Pingshi Hydrological Station to monitor and prevent floods. In 1943, Wu Shangshi, He Dazhang, and Luo Laixing jointly wrote “Risks and Prevention of Floods in Qujiang River” and “Water Power in Northern Guangdong”, and Luo Laixing wrote “Hydrological Study of Zhenjiang River and Wujiang River”.
Weather reports were crucial for the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. For this reason, the National Government founded the Central Meteorological Bureau in 1941 to collect meteorological records from the provinces every ten days and published the National Weather Ten-day News. By 1944, only weather reports from Guangdong Province were still lacking. To rectify the situation, the Central Meteorological Bureau asked for meteorological reports from the Pingshi Meteorological Station, which were renowned for their quality, and took them to represent the meteorological situation of Guangdong Province.
