Alumni Lin Bin and Liu Xiangdong donate 100 Million yuan to Sun Yat-sen University

Lin Bin, co-founder and vice chairman of Chinese technology company Xiaomi Corp, and his wife Liu Xiangdong, donated 100 million yuan to their alma mater, Sun Yat-sen University on April 17. They made the donation to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary, and support the development and construction of the university. Both Lin and Liu are graduates of Class 1986 of the university.

A donation ceremony was held at Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University on April 17, which was presided over by Xie Shi, vice president of the university.

At the donation ceremony, Lin was conferred the title of honorary trustee of Sun Yat-sen University, which marked the first honorary trustee of the university.

According to Lin and Liu, the donation would primarily foucus on enhancing learning and working conditions for faculty and students, including building the Lin Bin and Liu Xiangdong Sports and Cultural Center as well as setting up scholarships for outstanding undergraduate, postgraduate and medical students.

In his speech, Lin recalled his time studying at Sun Yat-sen University, expressing deep gratitude to his alma mater, teachers, mother, and wife for their support and guidance.

Lin said more than ten members of his family graduated from Sun Yat-sen University. “The university has laid the foundation for my life and career development. Sun Yat-sen University is the best university in my heart. I hope for increasing support from alumni towards the development of our alma mater,” said Lin.

Previously, Lin and Liu have established the Lin Bin and Liu Xiangdong Scholarship, which has supported near 100 diligent and innovative students of Sun Yat-sen University over the past decade.

Through setting up “Xiaomi Young Scholars” project and the “Xiaomi Scholarship” through Xiaomi Foundation, Lin and Liu have also contributed a lot to the education development of the university, including introducing high-level talents and cultivating high-quality students.

Chen Chunsheng, secretary of the CPC committee of Sun Yat-sen University and chairman of the Education Development Foundation, said that the university would definitely cherish Lin and Liu’s deep affection and goodwill, and would collaborate with alumni to achieve progress and new development.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Sun Yat-sen University. In his speech, Chen called on all alumni to come back home more often and jointly embark on a new journey of next centenary.

At the end of the ceremony, Lin and Liu had face-to-face communication with representatives of the university's faculty and students at the Alumni Home of Sun Yat-sen University, who enthusiastically shared their interesting experiences during their time at the university, the gains and inspirations they have had in their work, and answered questions from students about their studies, life, and entrepreneurship.
