On November 12, 2023, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) celebrated its 99th anniversary and kicked off its 100th anniversary year.

Founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924, SYSU has an educational tradition spanning over 100 years. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, the university is striving to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, and become a global center of learning. Its basic guiding philosophy is to target the global science frontiers, serve the main economic battlefield, strive to fulfill significant needs of the country and benefit people's lives and health.

On the morning of November 12, the 100th anniversary kick-off ceremony was held at Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus of SYSU, which was presided over by Xie Shi, vice president of the university.

Gao Song, president of SYSU, said the university sincerely invites alumni from home and abroad, friends from all walks of life, to gather in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, to attend celebration events and embark on the next centennial journey together.

In his address, Chen Chunsheng, secretary of the CPC SYSU, stated that in the next century, the university will continue to improve the quality of nurturing talent, achieve high-level scientific and technological self-reliance, and train more high-quality teachers, striving to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

During the ceremony, the university’s 100th anniversary logo was also unveiled. The design of the logo was inspired by the iconic architecture of SYSU, which represents the university’s distinctive architectural aesthetic and profound culture. The number “100”, incorporated in the logo, symbolizing the century-old history of the university, and features the silhouette of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, representing the university's connection to the great visionary. In the middle of the number 100, there is a silhouette of the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the university.

At the end of the ceremony, the countdown clocks for centennial anniversary were simultaneously unveiled among five campuses in Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen.
